MIS-FIRES

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, In : Major Offense
MIS-FIRES: As fans gnash their teeth for two weeks the Ravens have to tear apart the first part of the season and figure out what can be done to right the ship for the final run. They have dug a hole and will have to scrap and claw their way through the last nine games to make a push at the Playoffs. Fans do not have an inside view of the Team so we can only guess at why this team is looking like it has a malaise that may knock it out of the playoff run sooner rather than later.
 1. Injuries: ...

PITTSBURGH 19 - BALTIMORE 16 (3-4)

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, October 21, 2013, In : Major Offense
PITTSBURGH 19 - BALTIMORE 16 (3-4) : A very disappointing game in the AFC North that puts the Ravens in a difficult position going into the Bye. Although I did not have a good feeling about a game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh with their season on the line, it was a winnable game and the team was not up to the challenge.
The Defense was ripped by a running game that limped into the contest as one of the worst. The Steelers were able to move the ball at will, and came up with trick plays ...

GAME DAY IN PITTSBURGH

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, October 21, 2013, In : Major Offense
GAME DAY IN PITTSBURGH: An AFC North match-up that has historically been like a street-fight and decided by less than 7 points. These teams punch/claw/smack to see who is the last man standing. The biggest thing to be concerned about after who wins is how many casualties are listed on Monday. That defines why people get psyched for a Steelers' game every year.
The Coaches and Players know what is going on in the Castle and on Sundays. We as Fans have a limited knowledge, but are vested with ...

PURPLE FRIDAY

Posted by Major Offense on Friday, October 18, 2013, In : Major Offense
PURPLE FRIDAY : This is Steelers Week - and yet it feels lackluster. Is there a Super Bowl Hang-Over for Fans too? Or is it because this team is 3-3, has stumbled/fumbled/bumbled their way through the first six games; showing no spark, no imagination and no passion in four quarters of each game. There are problems with the O-Line, vanilla Play-calling and big injuries.

 1. There are 10 games left, so it is hard to identify something as "crucial". The Ravens are one game back of the Bengals and...

THE NEW WEEK

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, In : Major Offense
THE NEW WEEK: So the Ravens get ready to face the Steelers on Sunday in Pittsburgh, and neither team is getting any Love. Of course, based on how they have started the 2013 Season it is hard to see two powerhouses in the AFC North - or even any team in the North that "wows" you.
I would say that listening to Sports Radio this week is tough. I do get the assurance that I am not the dumbest sports fan on the block, so there is that benefit. There are so many of the callers who (1) Play Madden a...

GREEN BAY 19 - BALTIMORE 17 (3-3)

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, October 14, 2013, In : Major Offense
GREEN BAY 19 - BALTIMORE 17 (3-3) : The score does not reflect how the game was played. Aaron Rodgers was able to move his team and escape the rush, chewing up the clock when it was needed and getting away from the pressure when it was applied. The Ravens were able to stay close but failed to play like a good team. For a Home Game, this was not a strong performance.

 1. The Offense continues to struggle. The running game is a Total Failure; starting with the O-Line. There are no holes and Rice...

GAME DAY

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, October 14, 2013, In : Major Offense
GAME DAY: A damp, misty, and probably rainy day in Baltimore for the Ravens to host the Green Bay Packers. The Ravens have a good home record and have not lost to an NFC Team under Harbaugh here. The Packers are one of the teams that the Harbaugh-led Ravens have not beaten (albeit one game in GB).

Rain can benefit a passing game, since receivers know their routes and defenders have to adjust too quickly. Rodgers is one of the best QB's, has a quick release, and has an arsenal of good receiver...

MIDWEEK MEANDERINGS

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, In : Major Offense
MIDWEEK MEANDERINGS: I have not had a chance to view the recordings of the last two games, but I have seen some clips of various plays. As of now, here are some thoughts from being at the games and how the season has developed through five games:
 1. The trade for Monroe is a help, but whatever is the problem for the O-Line needs to be fixed. Flacco was slow to get up several times in the last two games and some of the shots made me cringe. Although I understand that throwing Shipley into the ...

BALTIMORE RAVENS 26 - MIAMI DOLPHINS 23 (3-2)

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, In : Major Offense
BALTIMORE RAVENS 26 - MIAMI DOLPHINS 23 (3-2): Getting to bed at 2:30 AM after the trip to Florida makes for a LOOONNNNGGG Monday. But it was a fulfilling return with a win under the belt. The Ravens made it happen - even if it was not at a prime performance.
 1. Dickson and Doss suddenly appeared on the scene. Dickson's first catch was an excellent play and he made things happen (like he was supposed to before). Doss ran some good routes and made the plays at the right times. I am not sure if...

GAME DAY IN MIAMI

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, In : Major Offense
GAME DAY IN MIAMI: Reporting from a hot place for football. The Baltimore Ravens face the Miami Dolphins for a fight to get the team back on track.
The Offense needs to get on track and the team needs to keep from slipping behind the Mighty Browns. Stokley was cut and Bajema was re-signed but the run game has got to get on track. They need to return to the road-grading blocking to get the game set. Finesse is not a Baltimore staple so let's just smack them in the mouth.
 While I sweat through...

PURPLE FRIDAY

Posted by Major Offense on Friday, October 4, 2013, In : Major Offense
PURPLE FRIDAY: The Ravens are still a work in progress. The line has been a glaring weakness and the receiving corps is a problem. There are quite a few injuries in the latter and a new face is joining the former.
Facing Miami this week will be tough. Keep an eye on Ellerbe, since he will want to prove that he is worth what the Dolphins were willing to pay. He will be an issue. And Wallace will look to slice up the secondary; if he can hold onto the ball.
This will be a tough test of a morphin...

TRADE

Posted by Major Offense on Friday, October 4, 2013, In : Major Offense
TRADE: Ozzie Newsome cherishes draft picks - oh wait !!! So he gives up a fourth and a fifth for a LT to replace McKinnie ? Did Bryant make a promise he did not keep ? Not play hard ? Not take his job seriously? Shocking !!!

So now we have to see the roster moves to free up a spot and how the cap room will be met. Monroe is 26 and in the last year of his contract. Is he the answer? When can he absorb the playbook? And will McKinnie remain a Raven for long?

What intrigue this early in the season...

FIVE PICKS

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, In : Major Offense
FIVE PICKS: When you see that stat you automatically think it is on the QB. Although I have not watched the TV version of the game I did see the highlights on the interceptions. Flacco did make some questionable throws, but there are a lot more issues.

1. Two of them came off the receivers' hands. Flacco does have a tendency to throw it high and let receivers go up and get them; but not everybody can do that. Dickson and Clark had the ball hit their hands and bounce in the air. As an aside, th...

BUFFALO 23 - BALTIMORE 20: U.G.L.Y.

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, September 30, 2013, In : Major Offense
BUFFALO 23 - BALTIMORE 20: U.G.L.Y. - Harbaugh said last year that the Ravens are not perfect, and not pretty. Boy was he right about yesterday. I am a Ravens fan; a miserable one right now but a fan nonetheless. This game was so much like the horse dung in Jacksonville a few years ago. Play like garbage but still come down to the end with a chance to win and end it with a pick.

There is not too much good about this one. In fact, I cannot remember anything good about it.
 1. The Defense looked...

GAME DAY AGAINST THE BILLS

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, September 30, 2013, In : Major Offense
GAME DAY AGAINST THE BILLS: Reporting from Buffalo this morning. A crisp September morning; one built for football.

The Ravens will have to come out and set the tone for the game. They have been slow to get their motor running ("...head out on the highway..") on offense, but that lets teams like the Bills hang around for an undeserved win. The Defense has to come out and put the Rookie QB on a merry-go-round; knocking him to the ground and make it like he is in the median strip of a highway. ...

PURPLE FRIDAY

Posted by Major Offense on Friday, September 27, 2013, In : Major Offense
PURPLE FRIDAY: The first of two back-to-back road games now face the Ravens. Going on the road in the NFL is not easy, no matter who you face. Right now, the Offense is still trying to get some balance and some focus. There are many areas that need to get stabilized before this team can be ready to extend the season.

This is a classic "Trap Game". A rookie QB, some new pieces in the defense, a new coach and a RB that can carry the water. The Ravens have not necessarily dominated in games like...

WEDNESDAY INJURY REPORT

Posted by Major Offense on Thursday, September 26, 2013, In : Major Offense

WEDNESDAY INJURY REPORT: It looks like some people are still working their way back:

I would hold Rice back one more week, since I think they will need him against Miami. It would leave them thin at RB since it looks like Draughn may not be active, but I would not want to rush Rice back. It looks like Cody will not be available so it is more important that Canty make it back. Marlon B...

BALTIMORE 30 - HOUSTON 9 (2-1)

Posted by Major Offense on Monday, September 23, 2013, In : Major Offense
BALTIMORE 30 - HOUSTON 9 (2-1) : This game surprised me. With the number of injuries the team sustained, and facing a team that is seen as a competitor in the AFC, I would not have been shocked if this was a loss. But the team came out and played all phases of the game for the win. While the Offense struggled to get on its feet, the Defense dominated the Texans and the Special Teams gave the team a score. The Offense did manage to show up eventually; even though there was nothing overwhelming...

RENOVATIONS TO M&T BANK STADIUM: I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Press Conference for the tour of the changes to the stadium; and George of Larry Beck Company joined me. There were alterations to the concourse and to the video board in the field.

THE SKY IS FALLING

Posted by Major Offense on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, In : Major Offense
THE SKY IS FALLING: On Saturday I was at Roost 50's Shrimp Feast when Jeff of Baltimore Sports & Novelty asked how the offense would handle the loss of Pitta. I had not heard of the injury so I thought it was a joke until I confirmed it with russellstreetreport.com. Of course, the buzz at the gathering was the impact that this loss would have on the passing game, especially in light of the Boldin trade. It was a major surprise development.

It is eerily similar to last year that a major player ...

BARGAIN BIN

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, In : Major Offense
BARGAIN BIN: One of the interesting elements of Training Camp is the search for the guys who put all of their effort on the table to try to make a team. It can be those who have kicked around the league for a while; always being the 46th to 53rd player. But there are also the Undrafted Free Agents; those who were not good enough to warrant a draft spot but who have been scouted enough to get a shot and who can pick where they feel they have a shot.

The Ravens focus on these players as part of...

2013 SCHEDULE: While waiting for the season tickets to arrive, I thought about taking a look at this year's schedule. It is way too early to consider how the team will play and what players will be injured, or how good the opponents will be this year, but there has to be something to fill this dead time.

1. The travel schedule is not bad this year. They have back-to-back away games 9/29 and 10/6, but the next time it is around the Bye Week (10/20, 11/3). The last six games are 3 Home, Away, H...

VETERAN WR

VETERAN WR: A big story this off-season is the trade of Anquan Boldin, with the loss of his veteran leadership. I was a big fan of "Q", a WR in a LB-body. His tenacity and on-the-field smarts made him an important piece in the game, and his performance in the playoffs in 2012 was a big part of the Trophy.

His loss may seem to be a big piece to fill. I am comfortable though that the team has a plan to cover his absence; and I am not sure it is through those who will get to Training Camp in a f...

ROSTER: Training Camp is about a month away, so we still have some down-time. At this point we have to dig for little points of interest to make the time go by.

My focus in Training Camp has always been the back end of the roster; those Special Team guys, those young players who will be the "Inactives" during the season but who are one step away from filling a void due to an injury. The pre-season games give us a chance to see guys that we will not see too much during the season.

LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP: One of the big talking points this off-season is that the team has lost leadership that needs to be replaced. The talk centers around who will step up to fill the holes created by Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Matt Birk and Anquan Boldin leaving. The discussion presumes that the Baltimore Ravens need a centerpiece or two to pull the team, and there is a search for that person who can step up and make it happen.

I have my own opinion about all of these developments, and am comfortable that t...

SALARY CAP INFORMATION

Posted by Major Offense on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, In : Major Offense
SALARY CAP INFORMATION: Here is a present snapshot of the salary breakdown of the roster. Although the top 51 may change it is unlikely that it will impact the numbers significantly. The "Dead Money" though is a big deal. Lewis, Cundiff, Boldin and Birk are a hit, but at least they are only weights for a year. Suggs and Ngata are shockers as active players - 24.5 million for two players. This is a fascinating part of the whole NFL picture.

TWO MONTHS TO TRAINING CAMP: As I pace waiting for the first hurdle to football for the 2013 Season:

1. Opening Night: So the NFL did not want to move the Opening Night due a bogus religious night excuse in a small market and decide to put it in a city with the QB that the National Media slobbers about? THE CITY THAT CAN'T REEEEEDDDD: Except when the Texans come to town. Ed Reed has accepted the Texans' deal and will not be a career-Raven. He has taken his two tickets to Houston and will help their defense with the talents that he has left.
It is a sad time, since Ed was a game-changer at times. Of course, he also was a free-lancer that left CB's exposed. And he left us at times saying "that is Ed being Ed". He has talent in the tank, but the Ravens have chosen to go in a different direction...

WIPING THE SLATE CLEAN: The last few days have seen a major change in the Baltimore Ravens - and not just in the roster moves. This appears to be a change in the deeper character of the team. The changes are not just related to age/cap space/market values. IMHO this is the bigger change to a true TEAM identity - and a shift to an team with a focus on offense for now.
